E-BIKE SAFETY IN SOUTHERN UTAH: WHAT RIDERS IN ST. GEORGE AND CEDAR CITY NEED TO KNOW

Electric bikes are becoming more popular every year across Southern Utah. From kids riding through neighborhoods in St. George to families exploring bike trails in Santa Clara and Cedar City, e-bikes have quickly become part of everyday life in our community.

With Southern Utah’s warm weather, growing trail systems, and outdoor lifestyle, it’s easy to see why so many people enjoy riding them. But as e-bike use continues to increase, so do serious accidents and injuries.

At McMullin Injury Law, we are seeing more crashes involving e-bikes, scooters, pedestrians, and vehicles throughout St. George, Cedar City, Santa Clara, and surrounding Southern Utah communities. Many of these incidents involve children and teenagers.

That growing concern is one reason Utah has recently updated several e-bike laws and safety regulations aimed at helping prevent serious injuries.

Why E-Bike Accidents Are Increasing in Southern Utah

Communities throughout Southern Utah have experienced a major increase in e-bike riders over the last few years.

People use e-bikes for:

  • Riding to school
  • Exploring bike trails
  • Neighborhood transportation
  • Commuting around town
  • Recreation with family and friends

The challenge is that many riders do not fully understand traffic laws, trail rules, or how quickly e-bikes can travel compared to traditional bicycles.

Unlike regular bikes, many e-bikes are heavier, faster, and capable of reaching speeds between 20 and 28 miles per hour. At those speeds, crashes can cause very serious injuries.

Utah Bicycle Crash Statistics

Recent bicycle and e-bike crash data from Utah between 2020 and 2024 highlights why rider safety has become such an important issue across Southern Utah communities like St. George, Cedar City, and Santa Clara.

Injury-related bicycle crashes2,358
Bicycle-related fatalities45
Crashes involving riders under age 2423%
Most common crash timeframe3 PM–5 PM
Leading contributing factorFailure to yield right-of-way

These numbers show just how common bike and e-bike accidents have become across Utah. As more riders use Southern Utah bike trails, neighborhood roads, and city streets, both drivers and cyclists need to stay alert and understand the rules of the road.

Understanding the Different E-Bike Classes

Many people are surprised to learn that e-bikes are separated into three different categories.

E-Bike ClassHow It WorksMax SpeedCommon Use
Class 1Pedal-assist only20 mphCommon on bike trails and recreational paths
Class 2Throttle-assisted20 mphPopular with younger riders
Class 3Pedal-assist only28 mphFaster and more restricted

Class 3 e-bikes are generally considered the highest-risk category because of their increased speed. Utah law restricts younger riders from operating certain high-speed e-bikes.

New Utah E-Bike Laws in 2026

As of May 6, 2026 Utah lawmakers introduced updated e-bike laws after concerns about rising injury rates involving children and teenagers.

Some of the updated rules include:

  • Riders under 21 must wear helmets on public roads
  • Children under 8 are not allowed to operate e-bikes on roadways
  • Riders ages 8–14 may require supervision
  • Riders under 16 cannot operate e-bikes that go over 20 mph without a license
  • DUI laws can apply to e-bike riders as well

The overall goal of these updates is to improve rider safety and reduce serious head injuries and collisions involving younger riders.

Common Causes of E-Bike Accidents

Many e-bike crashes happen for the same reasons traditional vehicle accidents happen: distraction, speed, and failure to yield.

Some of the most common causes of e-bike accidents in Southern Utah include:

  • Drivers failing to notice cyclists
  • Riders ignoring stop signs or traffic signals
  • Unsafe left-hand turns
  • Distracted driving
  • Riding too fast in residential areas
  • Failure to wear helmets
  • Poor visibility during evening rides

Intersections, neighborhood roads, and heavily used bike trails are often where the most dangerous situations occur.

Areas near schools, parks, and busy roads throughout St. George and Cedar City can become especially hazardous during after-school hours when many younger riders are outside.

Popular Bike Trails in St. George and Southern Utah

Southern Utah offers incredible biking opportunities, but riders still need to understand local rules and trail safety.

Popular riding areas include:

  • Virgin River Trail
  • Santa Clara River Trail
  • Snow Canyon pathways
  • Neighborhood trail systems in Washington Fields
  • Recreational paths throughout Cedar City

While many trails allow e-bikes, rules can vary depending on the location and type of trail. Riders should always pay attention to posted regulations and be respectful of pedestrians and traditional cyclists sharing the path.

Even on designated bike trails, high speeds and crowded conditions can create dangerous situations quickly.

What To Do After an E-Bike Accident

If you or your child is injured in an e-bike accident in St. George, Cedar City, Santa Clara, or anywhere in Southern Utah, taking the right steps afterward can make a major difference.

1. Seek Medical Attention

Even if injuries seem minor at first, adrenaline can hide symptoms. It is always safest to get evaluated by a medical professional.

2. Report the Crash

Contact local law enforcement so there is an official accident report documenting what happened.

3. Gather Photos and Information

Take pictures of the scene, injuries, vehicles, roadway conditions, and the e-bike itself if possible.

4. Save the E-Bike

Do not throw away or repair the bike immediately after the crash. It could become important evidence later.

5. Speak With an Attorney

Insurance issues involving e-bike accidents can become complicated quickly, especially when vehicles, homeowners insurance, or underinsured motorist coverage are involved.
