BIGGEST & SMALLEST SETTLEMENTS IN OCTOBER 2025: CAUSED BY SEMIS

Personal injury cases come in all shapes and sizes — and that’s true even when the same type of vehicle is involved.

At McMullin Injury Law, we handle everything from catastrophic semi-truck crashes to smaller claims where someone is thankfully able to recover quickly. And every month, we like to highlight a couple real examples to show how different injury cases can be, even when the cause seems similar.

In October 2025, both our biggest and smallest settlements involved semi-trucks — but the outcomes were very different.

October’s Largest Settlement: $500,000 Semi-Truck Crash

The largest settlement we resolved in October 2025 was a $500,000 case involving a semi-truck crash on I-15.

This was an extremely frightening collision. A family was traveling northbound on Interstate 15, just about to enter the Virgin River Gorge. At that point on the freeway, traffic speeds are high, and lane changes can be dangerous if a driver isn’t paying close attention.

In this case, a semi-truck changed lanes without seeing the family’s vehicle. The truck sideswiped them and pushed them off the road, causing the vehicle to roll.

Even when people are wearing seatbelts, a rollover crash can be violent and traumatic. It’s not just about physical injuries — it can leave families shaken emotionally for a long time.

Thankfully, most of the family did relatively okay. But the mother in the vehicle suffered serious injuries, including scarring that will remain on her body permanently.

Scarring injuries can be life-changing. They affect confidence, comfort, and how someone feels in their own skin. And when scars are permanent, they are often considered a long-term damage that must be accounted for in any fair settlement.

Because a semi-truck was involved, the insurance coverage available was much higher than in a typical passenger vehicle crash. But that doesn’t mean the insurance company simply pays what’s fair without a fight.

Semi-truck insurance carriers often defend cases aggressively, even when the crash is clearly their driver’s fault. These companies handle large claims every day, and they are trained to minimize payouts whenever possible.

In this case, we were able to secure a $500,000 resolution to help compensate the injured victim for what she went through and what she will continue to deal with long-term.

October’s Smallest Settlement: Semi-Truck Rear-End Crash Near Bloomington

Not every semi-truck crash results in life-altering injuries. Sometimes, the impact is lower, and people are able to recover quickly.

That was the case for our smallest settlement of October 2025.

This crash happened when a semi-truck exited at Brigham Road. The truck was likely heading toward the truck stop in the area. Unfortunately, the semi-truck failed to stop in time and rear-ended a vehicle that was waiting to enter the Bloomington Roundabout.

This type of crash is something we see far too often. When large trucks are involved, even a “minor” rear-end collision can still cause injury — but the severity depends on many factors, including speed, angle of impact, and how the occupant’s body absorbs the collision.

In this case, the two occupants of the vehicle were fortunately okay overall.

Both suffered injuries, but they were considered minor compared to what can happen in many truck crashes.

One person’s case resolved for $20,000.

The other person’s case resolved for $7,000.

The $7,000 case involved a trip to the emergency room, and the client was able to recover without needing extensive ongoing treatment.

This is a good example of how some injury cases are resolved quickly and efficiently when the injuries are limited and the recovery is straightforward.

Why Semi-Truck Settlements Can Vary So Much

People often assume that if a semi-truck is involved, the case is automatically “huge.”

But that’s not always true.

Semi-truck accidents can range from catastrophic to minor. The reason is simple: the settlement value depends on the injury, not just the vehicle.

There are several key factors that affect how a truck accident case resolves:

1. The Severity of the Injuries

This is the biggest factor in almost every personal injury case.

A rollover crash with permanent scarring and long-term trauma is going to be valued very differently than a low-speed rear-end collision where someone fully recovers after an ER visit.

2. The Amount of Medical Treatment Required

Insurance companies look closely at the medical timeline.

If someone requires surgery, physical therapy, specialist visits, and long-term follow-up care, the case will naturally involve higher damages.

If someone’s treatment is limited and recovery is fast, the case is typically smaller.

3. Long-Term Effects

Some injuries leave lingering symptoms, permanent restrictions, or visible scars.

Others resolve completely.

A settlement must account not only for what happened right after the crash, but also for what the person will continue dealing with months or years later.

4. Liability and Evidence

Semi-truck cases often require additional investigation.

Unlike a typical car crash, truck accidents may involve:

  • Driver logs

  • Black box data

  • Company policies

  • Maintenance records

  • Federal trucking regulations

The more complex the case, the more work is required to prove fault and damages — and the more likely the insurance company is to fight the claim.

5. Available Insurance Coverage

Truck accident cases often have higher policy limits, but the insurance companies managing those policies are usually very experienced and very aggressive.

Even when there is plenty of coverage available, that doesn’t mean it’s easy to recover the full value of the case.

What These October Settlements Show

October 2025 was a perfect example of a truth we see every day:

Even when the cause of the accident is the same, the outcome can be dramatically different.

Both of these cases involved semi-trucks.

Both involved innocent victims.

But one case involved permanent scarring and serious injuries, while the other involved minor injuries and a quick recovery.

That’s why we tell people: every personal injury case is unique.

It’s not just about the type of crash — it’s about how the crash impacted your life.

Our biggest and smallest settlements for the month of October, 2025 at McMullin Injury Law were both caused by semi-trucks. The biggest settlement in the month of October was $500,000. This was a really scary case where there’s a family northbound I 15, just about to enter the gorge. A truck changed lanes without seeing them, sideswiped them, pushed him off the road, rolled the vehicle.

Most of the family did okay, but the mom sustained serious injuries, scars that will be on her body for the rest of her life. That was a big deal. That was a half a million dollar resolution with the semi-trucks insurance.

By contrast, the smallest settlement at our firm in the month of October, 2025 was also from a semi-truck, but it was just a semi-truck exiting at Brigham Road, and was probably going to the truck stop there. They failed to stop in time though, and just rear ended a car that was waiting to get onto the Bloomington Roundabout. That type of crash happens, unfortunately all the time. Luckily, it wasn’t a super hard impact and the two occupants of the vehicle did okay.

They both suffered minor injuries. One resolved for a total of 20,000, one for 7,000, the one for 7,000. He had a trip to the ER and that’s it, they did great. So even semi-truck cases can come in in all shapes and sizes.
