BLUFF STREET CONSTRUCTION IN ST. GEORGE: WHAT DRIVERS NEED TO KNOW
If you regularly drive through St. George, you have probably already noticed some major changes happening on Bluff Street. Construction began in July 2026 on a significant improvement project stretching along one of the busiest roads in the city.
Bluff Street is a major route for St. George drivers, local businesses, visitors, and commuters. The improvements are designed not only to update the appearance of the area but also to improve traffic flow and make the road safer.
While the finished project should be a welcome upgrade, drivers will be navigating construction for quite some time. Here’s what St. George and Southern Utah drivers should know about the Bluff Street construction project and how to stay safe while work is underway.
Bluff Street Construction Will Bring Major Changes to St. George
The construction project focuses on the stretch of Bluff Street between St. George Boulevard and Main Street.
Anyone familiar with the area knows that this section of Bluff Street has several challenges. There are numerous businesses, driveways, turning vehicles, changing traffic patterns, and areas where drivers enter and exit the roadway.
The project includes four major improvements designed to modernize this important St. George roadway.
1. Improved Drainage Along Bluff Street
One significant change involves replacing and updating drainage along the west side of Bluff Street.
The existing drainage areas can create steep drop-offs near some business entrances and driveways. Updating the drainage system should create a more consistent roadside environment while improving the overall appearance and function of the street.
2. New Landscaped Medians to Improve Traffic Safety
One of the most noticeable changes will be the addition of raised, landscaped medians down portions of Bluff Street.
The landscaping should make this major St. George roadway more attractive, but the medians also serve an important traffic-safety purpose.
Bluff Street currently has many locations where drivers can attempt left turns while entering or leaving businesses. Every additional turning movement creates another potential point where vehicles can cross paths.
Raised medians can limit where certain left turns occur and help organize traffic into more predictable patterns. Fewer conflict points may reduce opportunities for failure-to-yield and left-turn car accidents while helping traffic move more consistently.
Why Left-Turn Accidents Can Be Dangerous
At McMullin Injury Law, we regularly see how quickly a routine left turn can turn into a serious car accident.
Drivers making a left turn generally need to pay close attention to approaching traffic, pedestrians, motorcycles, bicycles, traffic signals, and changing road conditions. On a busy commercial road like Bluff Street, those decisions can become even more difficult when vehicles are constantly entering and exiting businesses.
By reducing some of these turning opportunities, the new Bluff Street medians are intended to create a more organized traffic pattern.
Drivers should still remain cautious, particularly while construction temporarily changes the routes and turns they are accustomed to making.
3. New Curbs and Gutters Along Bluff Street
The project also includes new curbs and gutters along both sides of the street.
In addition to giving the area a cleaner, more updated appearance, these improvements will work alongside the drainage upgrades to modernize the roadway.
For a major corridor through the heart of St. George, these changes should make a noticeable difference once construction is complete.
4. Updated Lane Configurations for St. George Drivers
Drivers can also expect changes to lane configurations along Bluff Street.
Different portions of the road will include two- and three-lane configurations designed to make traffic patterns clearer and safer. The goal is to improve how vehicles move through the area while reducing confusion.
During construction, however, drivers should expect temporary lane changes as crews complete the project.
This is where extra caution becomes especially important.
Staying Safe During St. George Road Construction
Road construction can create unfamiliar situations even for people who drive the same route every day. A lane that was open yesterday may be different today, traffic may suddenly slow, and drivers may need to merge or change their normal route.
When traveling through the Bluff Street construction zone, give yourself additional time to reach your destination. Slow down, increase the distance between your vehicle and the car ahead, and pay close attention to temporary signs, cones, workers, and lane markings.
Most importantly, don’t rely entirely on habit. Even if you’ve driven Bluff Street hundreds of times, construction can change the roadway you’re expecting to see.
Distracted driving can also be particularly dangerous in construction zones. Put the phone away and keep your attention on the road, especially when lanes narrow or traffic unexpectedly slows.
How Long Will Bluff Street Construction Last?
Drivers should be prepared to see construction on Bluff Street for approximately the next year.
According to the project timeline discussed in the video, construction began on July 6, 2026. Work during 2026 is focused on the west side of Bluff Street between Main Street and St. George Boulevard.
The project is then expected to shift to the east side in spring 2027.
That means Southern Utah drivers should expect changing traffic conditions in this area for an extended period.
Drive Carefully Through Bluff Street Construction
The finished Bluff Street project should provide St. George with a more attractive, modern, and safer roadway. Landscaped medians, improved drainage, new curbs and gutters, and updated lane configurations should all contribute to a better experience for drivers once construction is complete.
Until then, patience and awareness will be essential.
Construction zones can bring slower traffic, unexpected stops, changing lanes, and distracted drivers—all conditions that can increase the risk of a car accident.
If Bluff Street is part of your regular commute, leave a little earlier, watch carefully for changing traffic patterns, and give other drivers plenty of room.
A little extra caution can go a long way toward keeping St. George roads safe while these improvements are underway.
